Location: Tampa, Florida
Size: 70 FeetThis 70 foot tall
painted steel sculpture stands in front of the new Tampa Bay Arena in
Florida. The arena not only serves as home to the Tampa Bay Lightning
hockey team, but also is the site of many public events and concerts.
People can walk through the lightning to get in and out of the arena.
During one of my early visits to the
Tampa site, and before my ideas for the sculpture had jelled, I noticed
flashes of light in the early evening sky. I asked my host, who was
driving us at the time, what this was about, since it was not a stormy
evening, and the sky seemed quite clear. It was explained to me that the
city of Tampa has more lightning than any other city in the United
States. Therefore, I finally decided on this lightning motif - not so
much to honor the hockey team, which is titled Tampa Bay Lightning - but
more importantly, to recognize this lightning phenomena in Tampa. In
order to symbolically and archetypally connect the beginnings of life to
these three lightning bolts, I chose to place a nine foot tall figure on
the ground at the center of this sculpture. This figure was actually an
early version of one of my male / female silhouettes (if you viewed the
figure from one direction you see a female, and if you viewed the figure
from another direction you see a male). Actually, I was asked to place a
silhouette of a hockey player in this location, but of course, I
gracefully had to refuse. The sculpture is referring to a much larger
idea and the hockey team, like many professional sports teams, could
easily move to another city in ten years, while the arena and the
sculpture live on. In fact, this sculpture, lightning, refers back to
the beginning of time and how the earth and life on it was most likely
formed. |
